Instilling Biblical Truths In Our Sons

In our day we see men who in all reality are far from being actual men. We see instead an image of a childish nature, not the biblical idea of a man. These 20-30 year olds wander about having fun, partying, spending money, and wasting their time on video games.

When you picture a “MAN” in your mind, does something like the above description come to mind? Or do you see a strong, well rounded, intelligent man with great state of mind and integrity? I see the latter and that is how I would like to envision my sons, my future men.

To create an intelligent, God fearing, ambitious man who will love his wife and family, we need to instill God’s Biblical truths into our sons. Sure we bring them to church with us and they go to youth group occasionally, but there needs to be more.

Psalms 78:6-8 says: “For He [The Lord] established a testimony in Jacob, And appointed a law in Israel, which He commanded our fathers, that they should teach them to their children, that the generation to come might know, even the children yet to be born, that they may arise and tell them to their children, that they should put their confidence in God, and not forget the works of God, but keep His commandments, and not be like their fathers, a stubborn and rebellious generation, a generation that did not prepare its heart, and whose spirit was not faithful to God.”

As parents in the 21st Century we must set the examples for our children. WE must lead and WE must teach the commandments of God and so pass on the torch to our children that they may carry it into the future.

But how can we teach it to our children by just going to church once a week? Attending your local church is good but our children need to hear from us, their guardians, their role models, their teachers. We must take it upon ourselves to “Train up [our] children in the way they should go, and when they are old they will not depart from it.” Proverbs 22:6

A good way to start is by having evening devotions as a family. Read through a book in the Bible and pray before bed. Or choose a devotional book to read through. There are many resources to get you started. There are books by Doug Wilson, John Piper, R.C. Sproul and many others. Go to to see thousands of great selections. If you think you don’t have time to have family devotions then you need to make time. Adjust your schedule and keep in mind while doing so that you are doing it for your children’s future and for the glory of God.

Also have your son read a Bible study on his own. Have him read in the morning before his day starts and/or at night before bed. It is important that your son develops healthy spiritual habits early in life. If he does not have an intimate walk with Christ as a child he may not have one as an adult.

Also, parents, we need to set the example. Titus 2: 6-8 says: “Likewise, exhort the young men to be sober-minded, in all things showing yourself to be a pattern of good works; in doctrine showing integrity, reverence, incorruptibility, sound speech that cannot be condemned, that one who is an opponent may be ashamed, having nothing evil to say of you.”

Teach, train, and exemplify. It will be difficult but God has not called us to a life of ease. He has called us to a life of servitude to our families and to our children. He has also called us to be the missionaries to our families. Teaching and spreading the word of God so that our Father in heaven might be glorified.

If you want to see the course of this world change then change it. If you want to see the hearts of your children turned to God, then turn them. If you want to see integrity and biblical values exalted throughout this country and the world then, it starts with you. You are building a generation, so build it with all your heart, strength, mind and soul.

God bless.
